The Compact is an agreement between the public sector and voluntary & community sector organisations. It is a commitment from both sides to work in partnership for the benefit and support of local communities. Currently there are two Compacts in Northumberland. Wansbeck Compact having paved the way back in 2001 followed by the Northumberland Compact in 2006. Ashington Children's Centre Summer Fair
London will host the Olympic Games and Paralymic Games in 2012. However, the four year programme of activity starts on 24 August 2008 and culminates in the Olympic games being held in the summer of 2012. National Government wants to achieve a legacy from the Games and there are plenty of opportunities for people to be inspired by the Games and to get involved in activities at all different levels.

Smoking remains the biggest cause of preventable illness and death with 87,000 people dying from smoking related illness in England per year. Since 1999 Northumberland Stop Smoking Service has worked to help those smokers who wish to quit, achieve their goal. Over 33,000 smokers have accessed the service during this time. Please note that the Choppington, Stakeford & Guide Post Community Area Partnership (CAP) meeting due to take place on 8 July 2008 has been cancelled. It will now take place on Tuesday 22 July from 6.00pm to 8.00pm at the Church of the Holy Family.
A new community radio station is being planned for south east Northumberland. Synergy is hoping to go on air for a first trial broadcast in July 2009. Working as a social enterprise, Synergy will be a community resource providing training for individuals and groups as well as promoting local causes, campaigns and initiatives. The Sustainable Communities Fund aims to build the capacity of the community and voluntary sector in Wansbeck, and help organisations become more sustainable. The fund is being administered by Wansbeck District Council and Wansbeck Centre for Voluntary Service. Funding for the scheme is provided through the Safer Stronger Communities and Cohesion Fund, which has been awarded through Wansbeck Initiative, the Local Strategic Partnership. Supported through the Investing in Communities Fund the Network Team based at Wansbeck CVS are offering free Health Checks for voluntary and community groups based in the Wansbeck area. Given the increasingly competitive nature of the sector, in relation to funding in particular, many major voluntary and community organisations are highlighting the importance of health checks as a means of working toward a secure future for community groups.
